No pressure or anything, right! |
When is the best time?
- Doctors recommend having unprotected sex every two to three days throughout your cycle, excluding your period. NHS info on timing sex
Pros: This reduces pressure to use OPKs, chart your ovulation signs and have scheduled sex - which let's face it can become a chore.
Cons: For many of us, sex every two days is a tall order.
- Near, during and immediately after ovulation
If you want to maximise the chances of his swimmers (sperm) meeting your egg, there is a plan called SMEP - Sperm Meets Egg Plan.
This involves having sex every two days from CD 6.
Also use an OPK to test for ovulation. When you get a positive or notice you have EWCM, have sex daily for three days, take a break for one day, then have sex once more.
It's basically a way of ensuring there is plenty of sperm hanging around to meet the egg.
For more information do a web search for SMEP as there are different versions.
Pros: Maximises your chances and focuses sex at the right time. Useful to use OPKs if your ovulation is irregular.
Cons: 'Sex on demand' can place stress and pressure on couples.
What you need to know:
- The egg lives for 12-24 hours
- Sperm can survive on average a couple of days, up to five days in fertile mucus
- A frequent supply of sperm maximises your chances.
- Sex should be healthy, happy and fun - it's a great way to bond with your partner. It's easily forgotten in TTC!
Coming up (pardon the pun!)....Sex- How to do it!
