Pills, pills, pills....

Tablets...mmm, yum(!)

I was amazed at the range of pills, potions, tablets, herbal remedies promoted for couples on the TTC journey....it's truly astounding!

If like me, you're not a big fan of tablets, rest assured there are easier ways to get your body in tip-top condition!

The one thing you do need is Folic Acid (vitamin B9)
We all have it present in our systems (mine was a little low, following a check at GP because I'm anemic).

What does Folic Acid do?

  • It is responsible for your baby's development in it's first 12 weeks.
  • In the early weeks, your baby's brain and spinal cord are starting to develop. Low Folic Acid is the major cause of birth defects known as neural tube defects, such as Spina Bifida
  • Ideally, you should start taking it before TTC.

How much should I take?

  • Most women need 400 micrograms of Folic Acid daily.
  • Some may need more, but this will be determined by your GP, based on current health conditions or family history.

Where can I get it?

  • Any chemist or supermarket will stock in, for a couple of quid or less for a months supply.
If you want a multi vitamin, go for one which is specifically for TTC or pregnancy.
  • I use Pregnacare Conception which includes Folic Acid and a whole range of vitamins. There are a range of similar products stocked by all major supermarkets or high street chemists such as Boots.

Check out the Go Folic website for more information and support. 'Before you frolic...go folic!'

Men also benefit from a supplement which includes zinc, to help promote sperm development. Pregnacare do a His & Hers supplement.

Summary  - it's important to give your body and baby the best start. Much of this can be achieved through a healthy diet, but a pre natal supplement can help. Folic Acid is a must!
